John Alexander (American, born 1945)
Oil on canvas
Gift of Henry V. Heuser, Jr.
In Untitled, the wild-eyed half-human beasts hiding in the shadows in many of Alexander’s other works are absent. Instead, serene pools of darkness extend into a horizon-less space filled with a tangle of green foliage. But all is not quiet, as a flurry of dark slashing marks infuses the painting with a volatile and foreboding energy.
